As a new user twitter can be a bit daunting and it sometimes takes a while to “get it”. My advice is to jump right in.

It can still be difficult to find good resources or people to follow on twitter. So I have complied a curated list of influential people and organizations with a focus on the public realm and landscapes. This is a good place to start for people interested in Landscape Architecture, the public realm and cities. These are also compiled on a twitter list at @space2place/s2p-picks-urban-landscape I will update this list as I find others with something to say.

Also if you have an ipad definitely check out Flipboard (check out the demo video). It has become my preferred method to browse twitter. You can just add a link to the list above to browse the content shared by the members of the list.

These awards are in addition to the Design Exchange awards we won for these projects last November.

We are excited that our work is being recognized and enjoyed by the public. We hope to continue to build on this success with more great projects.

Last year there majority of the winners were in Western Canada. In today’s New York Times there is an article about skaters taking advantage of abandoned pools in the backyards of foreclosed homes. This seems to be a throwback to the 70’s when people couldn’t afford to fill their pools leaving thousands of them empty throughout California. As documented in the movie Dogtown and Z-boys, skaters creatively figured out a new use for the empty bowls. These were the inspiration for the first skateparks.

Movie trailer to Dogtown and Z-boys, at the halfway point it starts into the quest for backyard pools.

Back then the skaters had to drive up and down back lanes standing on the roof of cars to get a peek into yards looking for a new challenge. It is interesting to read that today things have evolved a bit to the point where they are using google earth and checking realtor websites to find a new spot. In fact the internet also provides great ways to share information behind logistics of emptying a partially filled pool as well. Once again skaters are quick to find creative uses for the landscape.

I have heard this downturn in the economy may be similar to the 1970’s. I guess this is another example of how this is becoming a reality.

The seems be quite a bit of excitement surrounding the park and the park is receiving a lot of media coverage. We are hopeful that this will help to encourage support for more innovative public spaces throughout the lower mainland.

Below are 3 videos that have aired on recent local televison:

This segment aired on Shaw Access early in May. They did a nice job of framing some of the conceptual ideas and research that went into the creation of the park.

Garden City - shaw segment - May 2008 from space2place on Vimeo.

This segment aired on CTV and features an interview with Alexa. The overall structure of the park is roughed out and the scale of the park feels right. It is exciting to see it take shape. The first concrete pour is scheduled for next week, which is the next important step towards completion.

This past week was eventful because the old growth feature stumps we delivered to the site, and they look fantastic. The biggest one weighs 12,000 lbs! You can see how big they are in comparison to the people in the pictures. Though you don't get a true sense of them until you see them in person. It looks like we are headed toward a completion date somewhere around the end of October.
