Profile in the Vancouver Sun

Last Friday (June 13, 2008) the Vancouver Sun published an article profiling space2place. The article is framed around the Garden City play environment but also provides a look at how we approach our work.

Kuler

I thought I would share this great tool I found online. Kuler is a website developed by adobe where people contribute colour palette suggestions, which are are rated by "the crowd". It is a fantastic way to develop a strong selection of colours either by developing your own or sampling colours developed by another user.

Playpumps

I came across this site while doing some research for the creative playground currently under construction in Richmond. The PlayPump is a creative solution to providing clean drinking water in Africa and adding some great play value for children. This is one type of child labour to feel positive about.

We were considering using this at the playground in Richmond, but it didn't work out for our site. However, we will definitely look for other opportunities in the future.

The link to the frontline website features a brief video telling the story of the pump.

Young Designers

Yesterday, we facilitated a series of design workshops at Anderson Elementary School. We had the students design their ideal play environments. It was refreshing to work with them and see their enthusiasm for design.

These workshops are the initiation of the design process for a play environment for the City of Richmond. The city recognized that playgrounds have progressively evolved to the point where they have become predictable and too similar from park to park. A goal of our design for this project is to bring the fun back to children's parks and design a park that has a wider range of experiences. Now its up to us to pull these ideas together to create something unique for the city and community.

Laws of Simplicity

The laws of simplicity is a a site and book by John Maeda.  He is a professor at MIT studying design and technology.  In an effort to find a way through the clutter of life today he has identified these laws to help guide the way to achieve simplicity in "design, business, technology and life".  To me the 10th law sums everything up.

#10 - the one.  Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful.
